John Coltrane’s Blue Train was released in 1958 on Blue Note and stands as his only session as a leader for the label. Recorded in 1957 with a sextet that included Lee Morgan and Curtis Fuller, the album captures Coltrane at a transitional point, moving beyond hard bop conventions toward a more expansive approach.
The title track “Blue Train” anchors the session with a structured yet open-ended arrangement, while “Moment’s Notice” is known for its demanding chord changes and brisk pace. Elsewhere, “I’m Old Fashioned” offers a more relaxed standard reading, and “Lazy Bird” hints at the harmonic ideas Coltrane would continue to develop. This edition is presented on CD.
